RIP - PWIC 1996-2010 Saturday, February 6th at 8:30pm In 1996 the Prince William Ice Forum opened its doors - a little behind schedule (apparently they cut a corner on the roof), but we opened none the less. Many of my friends and I had spent the previous several weeks pushing bricks around and helping get the facility ready. We were high school aged hockey players that figured we had scored the greatest job in the world. After 15 years of doing anything I could in that place in literally came crashing down in front of me today. The Blizzrd of 2010 has consumed one of my biggest passions. That place was home away from home to so many of us. It was the place that kids looked forward to going to when they were watching the clock at school. It was the place that those of us that worked there took so much pride in making it everything we could. From the volunteer parents to the full time employees, we all made the Prince William Ice Center a great place for kids and adults of all ages to come figure skate, play hockey, or just skate recreationally. The tragic loss of our facility will leave a void in the community that will reach deep into the hearts of so many people of all ages. With the negative events of today being blasted all over the internet, its important to see the positive side of this tragedy. The owners of our facility (literally the entire family) had camped out at the rink this weekend to ensure the safety of any customers that did make it in. They saw physical signs of an impending problem and got the facility cleared out immediately. Because of the smart decisions on their part nobody was hurt in this disaster. The hockey community is strong and we will continue to move forward regardless of how large a set back this is. I have already heard of potential charity games and competitions at other facilities to help re-build our great rink. Regardless - WE WILL BE BACK. I promise everyone that our entire staff will do EVERYTHING we can to get things re-built as soon as possible. Yours in Hockey, RJ Zeigler Thank you very much for letting me know and we will get the word out. My sympathies for your loss. The Prince William facility and club has been a great venue for our league, Jamboree and playoff events and the league looks forward to playing their again in the future. Please do not hesitate to let us know whatever we can do. Mike Bancroft We're sorry to hear the news but glad you shared it with us. We'll certainly let our readers know about the collapse and the owners' intent, with enough community support, to rebuild. Thanks, MIke I'm still in denial that it's gone. I was part of the first petition towards the county to build this rink many years ago. I was in high school then seeing the non-existence of any level of hockey in area schools. I remember well when they had the grand opening a few years later. I was so happy to see that place open and despite all the ownership changes over the years, it survived and became profitable. The community really took the place in over the years and a great number of hockey programs for area schools and even great adult programs formed. And not only hockey, I saw figure skating programs and even more recently a speed skating program form there. I know of no other area rinks that have accommodated speed skating. It also became a very popular teen hangout over the years as well for public skates on Friday nights when they have a program called Club SK8 with a DJ even. I remember a few Friday nights when I was at the rink for a game thinking, Wow this place is really happening tonight! I also was starting to see some real nice changes over past year with the newest owner, Bill, making improvements to the rink. I saw he was making improvements to the facility and there was a planned outage this July for rink renovations. I also was enjoying what he was doing with the adult novice night program by stepping in and coaching the program himself this past season. I have been regularly going to this program to provide goalie services for the skaters as an aspiring new goalie over the last year. It was a great opportunity for me to get alot of practice in and also help out by giving the players a live target to shoot at for most of the drills. Bill really showed me he really cared for the place by getting himself involved in building up the adult hockey program further. This is probably the most important program for adult hockey in the entire DC area. No other rink has a program like this, and it really gives the opportunity to adults who missed playing hockey growing up the experience of learning and growing their game to a whole new level. I have no doubt he is going to rebuild the place, and it will be back even better than before. I morn for the loss of this wonderful place I called my second home, and I eagerly await to see its rebirth. |
